Beginner's Guide to Edible Oil Production: Step-by-Step Manufacturing Process

By Sajid Mughal • April 28, 2026 • 12 min read

Entering the edible oil processing industry in Pakistan represents a stable, high-demand entrepreneurial opportunity.

Pakistan is one of the largest consumers of edible oils globally, yet imports more than 80% of its edible oil requirements at immense foreign exchange expenditure. Concurrently, Pakistani consumers are turning away from industrially hydrogenated and chemically refined loose oils in search of pure, unadulterated cold-pressed alternatives.

This beginner's guide outlines the complete mechanical edible oil manufacturing flow, practical machinery requirements, and business startup fundamentals.

The Edible Oil Manufacturing Roadmap

Modern commercial cold press oil production follows a disciplined sequence of mechanical steps without harmful chemical extraction:

Step 1

Seed Sourcing & Grading

Procuring plump, dry seeds with verified moisture levels between 6% and 8%.

Step 2

Seed Cleaning & Destoning

Vibratory screening to eliminate sand, soil, stones, and foreign debris.

Step 3

Mechanical Extraction

Continuous cold screw pressing under 50°C to separate crude oil and cake.

Step 4

Micro-Filtration

Pressure plate filtering to remove suspended fibers and wax particles.

Step 5

Quality Inspection

Verifying clear color, natural aroma, acidity levels, and zero sediment.

Step 6

Bottling & Sealing

Packaging into food-grade bottles with airtight induction tamper seals.

Step 1: Raw Seed Sourcing and Storage

The quality of your finished oil is determined primarily by your raw oilseeds. In Pakistan, the most profitable startup seed crops include:

  • Mustard (Sarson / Raya / Toria): Abundantly available from Punjab and Sindh grain markets (*ghalla mandis*), offering 33%–38% oil recovery.
  • Sesame (Til): Highly profitable specialty crop with up to 50% recovery.
  • Groundnut (Moongphali): Popular in Chakwal and Potohar belts, giving aromatic peanut oil.
  • Sunflower & Canola: High commercial consumption for everyday healthy cooking.

Ensure seeds are stored on raised wooden pallets in well-ventilated, pest-free storage away from damp walls.

Step 2: Seed Cleaning and Preparation

Never feed raw seeds directly from grain bags into the press. Grain sacks commonly contain abrasive sand, stone fragments, and chaff that scratch pressing screws and contaminate edible oil. Using a vibratory seed cleaner equipped with multi-stage mesh screens removes 99% of impurities in one rapid pass.

Step 3: Mechanical Cold Press Extraction

Pour cleaned seeds into the stainless hopper of your MMEC cold press machine. The slowly rotating internal screw moves seeds forward along the tapered barrel. As the clearance decreases, massive mechanical pressure expels the oil through precision drainage slots while discharging pressed dry flakes (oil cake or *khal*) from the exit nozzle.

Maintain barrel temperature below 45°C–50°C to preserve heat-sensitive tocopherols (Vitamin E), polyphenols, and distinct natural aromas.

Step 4: Clarification and Filtration

Freshly pressed oil contains microscopic cloudiness known as *foots* (seed fibers, gums, and wax). Allow newly pressed oil to settle briefly in food-grade stainless settling tanks, then pump it through an MMEC plate-and-frame pressure filter. The oil passes through dense food-safe filter papers and canvas pads, emerging brilliant, crystal-clear, and shelf-stable without requiring harsh bleaching earths or deodorizing steam columns.

Step 5: Packaging, Induction Sealing and Branding

Bottle the clarified oil in dark amber or UV-blocking food-grade bottles to prevent light-induced oxidation. Seal containers with induction foil heat liners to prevent leaks and prove brand authenticity. Labeling must include brand name, net volume, manufacturing date, expiry date, nutrition breakdown, and food authority registration number.
